Chinese Red & Black Lacquer Box
This beautiful piece of lacquerware reflects a Chinese artistic tradition dating back over 7,000 years.
Lacquer is actually the sap from the lacquer tree, which is native to China. Thousands of years ago, the Chinese discovered that when this sap was applied in thin layers to an object, it would dry to form a hard, durable, and beautifully glossy surface. By the 8th century B.C., techniques had been perfected to the point where stunning works of arts were created out of lacquer. These pieces were treasured by the elite and considered more valuable than bronze, the other prized material of the period.
This beautiful lacquer piece has been handcrafted using centuries-old traditions. Individual layers of lacquer were hand-poured on a wooden base, and then hand-polished over several days to produce a deep, rich finish that is impervious to heat and alcohol. This process produces a beautiful, yet durable, product that you should enjoy for many years to come.
Care
This lacquer item may be cleaned with plain water. When needed, a high-quality lacquer polish can be applied to refresh the glossy finish.
