This pillow consists of 700 individual squares of genuine mother-of-pearl, accented by glass beading on an ivory satin background. It is handcrafted in India.
Mother of pearl is a special and beautiful material made from the shells of sea creatures such as oysters. It is constructed from nacre, a secretion produced by the oyster from minerals in its diet. When this same secretion coats a foreign body that has made its way into the oyster’s shell, the result is a pearl.
Like pearls, mother of pearl has long been prized for its ability to reflect light, producing a subtle rainbow of colors. For centuries, artisans around the world have appreciated the unique qualities of mother of pearl and used it to create beautiful decorative objects. Evidence of this art form goes back to the Sumerians, and has been found in cultures as diverse as Greek, Roman, Chinese, Byzantine, and Egyptian.
