Sushi Set - Blue Dragonfly
This sushi set represents two great traditions of Japan – sushi and the symbolic dragonfly motif. The dragonfly is regarded as an important national emblem of Japan, which is itself sometimes known as ‘Dragonfly Island.’ Symbolic meanings are plentiful and varied. In ancient times, Japanese farmers believed it represented the spirit of the rice plant, and its presence foretold a good harvest. It also represents strength and immortality. Samurai warriors often incorporated dragonflies into their armor to provide protection from danger.
Sushi has become the world’s best-known Japanese food. The origins of sushi can be traced back over 13 centuries, when fish and rice were combined with salt, then left to ferment for one year or even longer with the goal of preserving the fish. Over time, techniques evolved into the sushi styles found today, most often Nigiri with a thin slice of raw fish on a ball of vinegar-flavored rice, and Maki with fish and rice rolled in seaweed.
Although sushi is relatively simple to make at home, highly trained sushi chefs elevate this simple dish to an art form with unusual items and elaborate presentations. These chefs train for many years in order to become true masters of the art of sushi.
